I would like to purchase a mobile phone for a friend as a birthday gift. Will a phone purchased in the United States work in Tunisia.

every telephone, no matter what brand, that would work in Europe will also work in Tunisia, since the frequencies used in Tunisia are a subset of the ones in Europe. Tunisias phone companies offer currently GSM and UMTS standard, GPRS & EDGE (big towns) and HSDPA (UMTS and HSDPA currently only in big towns along the coast by the new provider Orange)

An alternative to buying a phone in the USA would be to buy one in Tunisia instead - which will then also offer a warranty that is valid in Tunisia and a dealer "around the corner" in case of problems - and almost all telephones sold in Tunisia can manage arabic language characters while many sold in Europe/USA can not.

Prices are, in Tunisia, lower for low class, about the same for medium class and higher for high class telephones.

Jendouba might not be the best place to buy it. I would suggest either the big towns Tunis or Sousse, both of which offer many shops, competition and therefore acceptable prices.

There are also from time to time special sale offers by Tunisiana (in their shops or online shop) and the big supermarkets, namely Carrefour and Carrefour Market (formerly Champion). Some information can be found on their website:
